The House of Gaga - I love this little fashionista monster!!!

Lady Gaga, you have really impressed me! Shame on me for thinking you were a trashy, rebel songtress!!

After watching her humble appearance on the Oprah show, I have totally changed my opinion. She is obviously all about being yourself and having confidence in your uniqueness. She has no fear when it comes to fashion and rarely are these fashion statements anything but her artistic expression. I love that! The one thing she said on the Oprah show that really impressed me was her advice to young adults to always maintain a respectful, close relationship with your parents. Her parents helped her achieve her dreams even though they didn't understand them and she is obviously extremely grateful for that. I haven't even mentioned the fact that she is an extremely talented artist!!

Give more to charity - New Year's Resolution # 3!!

Anytime tradegy happens around the world, like the earthquake in Haiti, I think to myself, "I really need to give more to my community and abroad." Instead of having a moment of sadness and need to give, I am striving to give all year long. I have listed some charities below that Garry and I have passion for. Enjoy!!www.habitat.org If you don't have a lot of extra cash, Habitat is a great way to donate. You can donate your time to help build homes in your community.

www.worldvision.org World Vision has a number of opportunities to donate, both in the U.S. and abroad.
www.charitywater.org Almost a billion people on the planet don't have access to clean drinking water. Charity water is a non profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. 100% of public donations directly fund water projects.

www.unicef.org UNICEF is committed to changing the world for children. It strives to protect their rights, improve their health, and nurture their development through sound planning and monitoring of policy results. www.feedingamerica.org Every $1 you donate provides 7 meals to men, women, and children in America.

For as little as $10.00, dollars, you can help a rape victim in Africa.
For as little as $10.00, you can save a slave.
For as little as $7.00, you can educate a child.

Complete my home improvement projects - New Year's Resolution #2!!

I know this is a lofty goal to complete all of my projects this year but....that's why they are called goals!!! Let me make it very clear that I love, love, love my house. I just want to update a few small things...

We have some pretty hideous wallpaper in all three of our bathrooms. I want to strip it all off, texture the walls and paint. I also want to get rid of the wall-to-wall mirrors in there and replace with some more contemporary ones.

We have a big kitchen with lots of counter space and plenty of storage. I'm not in love with our counters so I would like to replace with granite. Our appliances are in major need of an overhaul! We will replace with GE stainless appliances.

A good cleaning will help give our carpet a quick makeover but eventually we want hardwood downstairs and super plush, feel good on our toes, carpet upstairs.

Last on my list is to update our fixtures. They are certainly shabby...not so chic!
That doesn't sound like too much to me...I'll consider this post my official "honey-do" list for Garry!

Reduce...Reuse...Recycle! - New Year's Resolution # 1!!

This post begins my "New Year's Resolution blog series"! I have never been a big believer in New Year's Resolution's as they generally lead to me feeling overwhlemed and dissapointed but I've had a change of heart this year! It might be a result of being pregnant and feeling like I need to contribute more or just the fact that it's 2010 and this year seems a bit more monumental than the last few. Either way, here they go...

I will admit however important I feel "going green" is, Garry has always been the more enviromentally conscience one of us. So, these are some helpful tips for those of you who may not be as savvy at reducing your carbon footprint as you would like!

1) Reduce, Reuse, Recycle...do your part by choosing reusable products instead of disposables. Recycle paper, plastic, newspaper, glass and aluminum cans. By recycling half of your household waste, you can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually!!

2) Use Less Heat and Air Conditioning...Adding insulation to your walls and attic, and installing weather stripping or caulking around doors and windows can lower your heating costs more than 25 percent, by reducing the amount of energy you need to heat and cool your home.
Turn down the heat while you're sleeping at night or away during the day, and keep temperatures moderate at all times. Setting your thermostat just 2 degrees lower in winter and higher in summer could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year.

3) Change a lightbulb...Wherever practical, replace regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. If every U.S. family replaced one regular light bulb with a CFL, it would eliminate 90 billion pounds of greenhouse gases, the same as taking 7.5 million cars off the road.

4. Drive less and drive smart...Less driving means fewer emissions. Besides saving gasoline, walking and biking are great forms of exercise.
When you do drive, make sure your car is running efficiently. For example, keeping your tires properly inflated can improve your gas mileage by more than 3 percent. Every gallon of gas you save not only helps your budget, it also keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

5. Buy Energy-Efficient Products...When it's time to buy a new car, choose one that offers good gas mileage. Home appliances now come in a range of energy-efficient models, and compact florescent bulbs are designed to provide more natural-looking light while using far less energy than standard light bulbs. Avoid products that come with excess packaging, especially molded plastic and other packaging that can't be recycled. If you reduce your household garbage by 10 percent, you can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.

6. Use Less Hot Water...Set your water heater at 120 degrees to save energy, and wrap it in an insulating blanket if it is more than 5 years old. Buy low-flow showerheads to save hot water and about 350 pounds of carbon dioxide yearly. Wash your clothes in warm or cold water to reduce your use of hot water and the energy required to produce it. That change alone can save at least 500 pounds of carbon dioxide annually in most households.

7. Use the "Off" Switch...Save electricity and reduce global warming by turning off lights when you leave a room, and using only as much light as you need. And remember to turn off your television, video player, stereo and computer when you're not using them.

8. Plant a Tree...If you have the means to plant a tree, start digging. During photosynthesis, trees and other plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. They are an integral part of the natural atmospheric exchange cycle here on Earth, but there are too few of them to fully counter the increases in carbon dioxide caused by automobile traffic, manufacturing and other human activities. A single tree will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime.

9. Get a report card from your Utility Company...Many utility companies provide free home energy audits to help consumers identify areas in their homes that may not be energy efficient. In addition, many utility companies offer rebate programs to help pay for the cost of energy-efficient upgrades.

10. Encourage Others to Conserve...Share information about recycling and energy conservation with your friends, neighbors and co-workers, and take opportunities to encourage public officials to establish programs and policies that are good for the environment.

These 10 steps will take you a long way toward reducing your energy use and your monthly budget. And less energy use means less dependence on the fossil fuels that create greenhouse gases and contribute to global warming. Happy Recycling to all!!

Vancouver Island, British Columbia - June 2009

From Seattle, we took a ferry over to BC to visit Garry's brother Mike and his wife and kiddos. Garry had taken this trip before but Jen had never been on a ferry boat...she LOVED it! Like a kid on their first ride at Disney World! We had so much fun. We hung out with the fam, went to the beach, ate great food and went bunjee jumping. Jen jumped like a pro...Garry on the other hand...not so much. Mike and Tamara's three kids heard some words they had never heard before! We really wish we could see them more often!

Seattle - June 2009

Since we've been together, we have taken some really great trips but Seattle was one of the most fun and memorable. We LOVE LOVE LOVE this city! We probably walked a gazillion miles but were able to see the space needle, shop around at the farmers market and eat some of the BEST seafood we've ever had.
Four places you MUST go to if you visit Seattle:
1) Piroshly Prioshky - little russian stuffed pies with a variety of fillings...freaking awesome! www.piroshkybakery.com
2) The OG Starbucks....pretty fab!
3) Elliott's Oyster House - delish! http://www.elliottsoysterhouse.com/
4) The Edgewater Hotel - awesome! www.edgewaterhotel.com
Fun! We can't wait to go back. Maybe we could take a Alaskan cruise out of Seattle...

Preggers Update: Week 22!

We are really excited to start posting all the shenanigans that we are going through as a "first-time pregnant couple" as they are usually pretty funny and only occasionally harmful to our pride!

This week the baby is 11 inches and almost 1 pound! He is starting to look like a miniature newborn. His lips, eyelids, and eyebrows are becoming more distinct, and he's even developing tiny tooth buds beneath his gums. His eyes have formed, but his irises still lack pigment!

Pretty crazy that there is a little human being growing in Jen's ever expanding belly.

Overall, Jen is feeling super healthy with no morning sickness or any adverse pregnancy symptoms outside of the occasional and TOTALLY rational mood swing!

Ironman, Coeur D'alene: June 2009...Swim, Bike, Run, Drink Beer!

Garry competed in the Ford Ironman Triathlon in Coeur D'alene, Idaho in June of 2009. He finished the race in 11 hours, 20 minutes and 21 seconds! He started competing in Tri and training for this race in Janary of 2008! HUGE commitment and HUGE accomplishment. It was an amazing race and a great trip. If you've never been to CDA, we would reccommend it! It's also the home of the world's only floating golf green!

Honeymoon

We went to Tulum, Mexico for our honeymoon and stayed at the Dreams Resort. It was awesome! We had such a great time and would definitely reccommend it. It was super secluded so if you want to party every night, this is probably not the spot for you. If you are looking for TOTAL relaxation, a private beach, awesome spa services and great customer service, this will be a great fit!
